Follow the steps below to participate in your class' Discussion Board.
Navigate to your course, and click on Discussion Board on the course menu on the left-hand side.
You will be taken to a list of forums. A forum is a place where related discussions can take place. Click on the appropriate forum, as indicated by your instructor.
Once inside the forum, you will see a list of threads. A thread is a discussion in which students and the instructor can communicate by making posts.
Note: if you do not see any threads, click on the Display button in the upper right-hand corner, and choose Show All from the options in the drop-down list.
To reply to a thread
Open a thread inside a forum.
On the thread's page, you can view the text of the post and information, such as the author and posted date. All replies appear on the same page with the parent post.
Point to the post to see options such as Reply, Quote and Email Author. The Quote option includes the post's text as part of your reply. Select Reply. If you want to view only the unread posts in the thread, select Unread. The unread posts appear on one page.
The page expands below the post you're responding to. You can view the post and access the editor.
If needed, edit the Subject. Type your reply in the Message box. You can also attach a file.
After the Message box, you can attach a file. Select Browse My Computer to upload a file from your computer.
Select Save Draft to store a draft of the post or select Submit to publish your reply.
Note: On the thread page, your reply appears at the end of the list. If you attached a file, a paper clip icon appears next to the post's title. If you used the Insert/Edit Image option, the image appears with the text.
To create a thread
In some instances, your professor may allow you to create a new thread from scratch, rather than replying to an existing one. To create a thread, follow the steps below.
Open a discussion board forum and click on the Create Thread button in the upper left-hand corner.
The Create Thread page opens and you can view the forum description as you write your response.
Type a subject and instructions, a description, or a question. You can use the editor options to format the text and add files, images, web links, multimedia, and mashups.
You can attach a file in the Attachments section. Select Browse My Computer to upload a file from your computer.
Select Save Draft to store a draft of the post or select Submit to publish your thread.
To post in the thread, follow the instructions above in the To Reply to a Thread section of this tutorial.
